A Smiling You: The Power of a Smile

Upon first thought, a smile seems pretty straightforward. “Smiling is the simplest thing we can do and it’s something that we’ve forgotten to do.”  When we smile, we travel through lives and moments that everyone can understand and enjoy.  Decades of research has established that smiling and laughter boost our well-being, reduce anxiety and stress, and enable us to cope with good and bad situations.

Interestingly, research has shown that facial expressions can influence your emotions. “If we can capture a million smiles, and smiling is scientifically known to be as contagious as a cold, maybe that million can spread to others and inspire a billion smiles.” From love, faith, family and giving, to challenging today’s distorted, materialistic idea of ‘success’, we can show people life, and happiness through only a smile. These days people don’t always seem to have the time for simple gestures of kindness or happiness. For instance, the act of smiling can make you happier, even if it’s a fake smile. Some studies have also stated that “the facial changes involved in smiling have direct effects on certain brain activities associated with happiness.” So just do it. Start smiling and laughing more.  The only way to protect our happiness, is to protect the happiness of others. “Smiling is universal” to life.
